Journal Blog 2 (p.18 …)

Questions I want to wright about:

Words I’m unsure of their meaning:

Word:                              my translation:                     dictionary:

nodding                            (zustimmen)                           nicken

confidentially                   einverstanden                         vertraulich

humorously                     humorvoll                               heiter, humorvoll, scherzhaft

uneasy                             genervt, gestresst                   unruhig, ruhelos, bange

defiantly                           scheu                                      trotzig. Aufsässig

warrant                            Sträfling                                  Vollmacht, Befugnis

involuntarily                     unfreiwillig                              unfreiwillig

showing annoyance        genervt                                   verärgerung zeigend

to notice somebody         jmd. mustern                          jmd. Wahrnehmen

The meaning of these words (on Page 18 to 21) were not very clear for me in the beginning. A few of them, for example humorously or involuntary, I could translate them by guessing from the context. Others of my interpretation like nodding were similar to the dictionary meaning. And there were also expressions I couldn’t translate through deducing from the context. Examples for this were confidently, defiantly and warrant.

I realized that I’m often not sure about words, which explains the tone or the way actors have to say these particular sentences in the theatre. That’s because we don’t have a good context to guess what these Words could mean.

Here an example: (p. 18)

“ERIC (defiantly). Nothing.”

It’s not easy to guess from the context what this word “defiantly” means. In this case it’s difficult because we don’t know exactly Erics character and he only say one word (“nothing”).There is no specific evidence.

Words: 217

  1. Very good entry and the explanations are interesting. You're right, the stage directions don't offer much context.
